Where in the World is Gold Medal?

Gold Medal swimmers and their families travel to so many amazing and interesting places, family vacations, etc.....  Let's share our travels with one another and submit pictures of ourselves outfitted in our favorite GMSS gear with a few sentences describing the picture and location and perhaps even an interesting thought related to the trip.  Travels will be included in the monthly esplash with photos and descriptions available on our Swim School web site.

Why Choose Swimming?
Here's why:

1.  Swimming is a life saving skill and life enjoyment activity.

2.  Swimming through the "Dolphin" level (fundamental swimming) is like learning math...you may not need to become Olympic champion or a Nobel prize winner but fundamental skills are necessary regardless if, at the time, we enjoy them.

3.  Swimming is enjoyed as a social activity, and if you are not a relaxed and strong swimmer, activities like going to the beach, snorkeling, sailing, deep-sea fishing, and surfing are stressful or even impossible.

4. There's virtually no limit to the possibilities of swimming. Swimming skills are particularly important to learn as children, when exercise and activity, as well as social interaction, are crucial to development. Swimming is one of the few exercises that you can take part in your whole life...learning takes time and resources but project the cost out over a child's life and weigh the cost vs. benefits. Swimming is an investment.

The Gold Medal Swim School believes that swimming should be FUNdamental for children 3 months and beyond.  No matter the age, it is never to late to learn.  YES, all ages and ability levels can be taught to swim relaxed and comfortably.
Pre Competitive Programing Redesigned

Summer programs are coming to an end but the fun at GMSS is just beginning!

The Gold Medal Swim School "Shark" squad has been renamed Pre Competitive Swim Team.  This is to more clearly communicate the three part process at GMSS that builds up to year round United States Swimming registered competitive swimming.

Additionally, the Gold Medal Swim School "Fall Swim Team" squad has been renamed Competitive Swim Team.  This clarifies the 10 month season for the "Competitive Swim Team" program.  This team is the the second tier of the three part process. The Competitive Swim Team will train and compete August-May.  Swimmers can enroll in Summer Swim Team OR try the GMSS Pre Elite program during the summer months.

Please speak with your coach in the Fall and Spring for specific details and the appropriate squad for each swimmer.
Also, a series of swim meets for a GMSS Pre Competitive and Competitive Swim Teams have been added.  These competitive meets will be on Friday evenings and are scheduled for two hours.  Meet information can be found online under specific program information.

Swim Meets Now Open to

ALL ABOUT THE FUNDAMENTALS

Gold Medal Swim School believes that the mastery of the swimming fundamentals will create a lifelong swimmer.

Why rush to the next skill?  Weak fundamentals are like a house built on sand...Instead of rushing to the next skill...the next level....the next stroke, master the fundamentals.  Mastery of the basics will make the difference.  After 70 years of combined swimming experience, coaching dozens of Olympians, we believe that one of the main differences between the Olympian and the basic swimmer is the mastery of the basics, or fundamentals.

Learn these values now, don't rush, and your child will become a lifelong swimmer able to save themselves and if they want....race for the gold.

Swimming at Gold Medal is fundamental

Core Values

1.  Air Regulation
2,  Relaxation/Gliding
3.  Body Position
4.  Kicking (the engine of the stroke)

The "frosting" of the swimming "cake" is when we add the arms-long and strong arms.

New Pediatric Swim Lesson Recommendations

From the American Academy of Pediatrics:  Parents should consider swimming lessons for most children between ages 1 and 4 in new guidelines on drowning prevention and water safety.  This is an updated recommendation reflecting several studies that have shown a correlation between swim lessons for young children and water safety.

"In light of new research that has revealed that swim instruction for children 1 to 4 years of age may decrease drowning, it is reasonable for the AAP to relax its policy regarding the age at which children should start learning water-survival skills," the authors say in the report.  Read complete article.....
Enjoy your pool and always watch your kid around water.

New Pediatrician Recommendations
Parents should consider swimming lessons for most children between ages 1 and 4, the American Academy of Pediatrics urges  in new guidelines on drowning prevention and water safety. This is an updated recommendation reflecting several studies that have shown a correlation between swim lessons for young children and water safety.

“In light of new research that has revealed that swim instruction for children 1 to 4 years of age may decrease drowning, it is reasonable for the AAP to relax its policy regarding the age at which children should start learning water-survival skills,” the authors say in the report.

Drowning is the second-leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 19, according to the AAP report. New data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commissions finds children between the ages of 1 and 2 represent 47 percent of submersion injuries and 53 percent of fatalities for children younger than 15. The CPSC has launched Poolsafety.gov as as an educational resource for parents, providing pool safety videos and links to resources on drowning prevention.

“Children need to learn to swim,” say the authors of the Pediatrics report. But they also warn parents not to equate swimming lessons with “drown proofing.” A multilayered safety approach is recommended. Children with swimming instruction and skills can still drown.

"Parents know they should be vigilant while children swim, trouble can occur in an instant of inattention", said Dr. Jeffrey Weiss of Phoenix Children's Hospital and lead author of the policy.

"It's not a lack of supervision, it's a lapse of supervision," Weiss said.

The updated policy, released in May (2010) by the Journal of Pediatrics, also recommends fences around all pools, even popular inflatable ones. Kids can drown by leaning over the soft sides and falling in.

Beside swimming lessons, here are three additional things parents can do:

Fence in your pool: Many parents do not consider putting fencing around large inflatable pools, the AAP says,  and because these pools are considered to be potable, they fall outside of many state regulations. The AAP recommends parents install a four-sided fence that is at least 4 feet high if you have any kind of pool in your back yard. The American Red Cross also offers a home pool maintenance class online to help you ensure your pool is set up properly. The two-hour class costs $19.95 and you receive a manual to keep at your home.

Learn CPR: According to the NIH, “all parents and those who take care of children should learn infant and child CPR if they haven't already.” But note that CPR recommendations vary by age group. You can find a CPR training class near you through the American Heart Association, and the National Institutes of Health has guidelines for performing CPR on children between the ages of 1 and 8.

Purchase the proper gear: The AAP warns against using inflatable swimming aids because they can easily lose air and they “are not designed to keep swimmers safe.” On the academy's  website, parents can view a list of the types of personal flotation devices approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Jump Into Summer

Looking for a way to get your swimmer ready for summer fun or summer swimming speed?  Gold Medal has the perfect solution... 45 minute classes offered in blocks of 5 consecutive days.  Call 480-961-7946 (SWIM)

Summer Swimming Tips
Backyard swimming pools are beginning to warm up.  Parents may start to consider "taking a break" from their child's weekly swim lesson.  Summer is an important time to remain consistent with your child's lesson schedule.

Swim lessons teach children valuable lifesaving skills. At the Gold Medal Swim School it starts with water relaxation.  A relaxed swimmer, will make the right "survival choices" and learn faster, even in very stressful situations.  This sounds simple, but after 50 years in swimming we know this step can not be overlooked.  Once relaxed, we teach a turn around back to the wall sequence, back floating and air regulation.  Keep it simple and basic...the fundamentals of swimming are universal and applicable from infancy to Olympic Champion.

Relaxation and water exploration enables kids to develop their cognitive and motor skills. Swimming lessons will provide them with all the skills needed to survive in water.
