Why Gold Medal?
Gold Medal Swim School is built on a unique foundation of core values. It begins with Baby & Me families and swimmers and resonates through the competitive programs. Swimming is not a complicated sport. The basic fundamentals can be reinforced through positive and creative drills that allow each swimmer to increase self-awareness as an athlete. The GMSS core values are Safety, Air Regulation, Relaxation, Body Position, and Propulsion.

Safety: We are committed to the highest level of safety for all who enter the doors of Gold Medal Swim School. All Gold Medal families recognize the importance of swim lessons as the most important layer in water safety.

Every program at Gold Medal Swim School starts with “Sit, Listen, & Wait” – where every student waits to be invited into the pool. This concept is reinforced with every student in every class. Our goal is to teach swimmers to never go swimming in a pool without an adult. We want to avoid a potential drowning by teaching our students to avoid being unsupervised in the water in the first place. In the case that a swimmer does accidentally fall in the water, our goal is to equip them with as many life-saving skills as possible.

Starfish students learn the Turnaround Survival Sequence; every class they are quizzed on what to do if they fall into the pool and then practice doing just that! A graduating Starfish performs the Turnaround Survival Sequence while wearing clothes and shoes.

“Rolling to the back” starts in the beginning levels as well and is carried through into competitive swimming, as rolling to the back then becomes side-breathing.

Our Seahorse graduates perform a “Survival Jump,” where they jump in fully clothed with shoes, roll on their back, and kick to the far side of the pool. This is a milestone event that is cheered pool-wide while the student swims!”

Air Regulation: Consistent exchange of air primarily through the mouth, by exhaling under water (blowing bubbles) and inhaling above the water. There should be no double breath while the head is above the water.

Relaxation: Relaxation is developed by water exploration, proper air regulation, and water confidence. A relaxed swimmer will be able to think more quickly in a survival situation; add skills more quickly; and swim longer, farther, and faster.

Body Position: Body Position is the swimmer's platform from which all strokes emerge. A tall body line helps reduce drag and puts the swimmer in the best position to not only survive but be as fast as possible.

Propulsion: Propulsion is speed, built from the legs up and increasing in efficiency as the other Core Values are strengthened.

Arms are added as the final component after a swimmer has mastered the five core values;safety, proper air regulation, true relaxation, correct body position and strong kicks.
